Hot Black: But Honey, It’s Not What It Looks Like!

Hot Black: But Honey, It’s Not What It Looks Like!

Took a big trip
With your old band
To your homeland
For the wrong man

Hot Black is the hot new animated music video that was written and hand-drawn by Ofir Sasson for HotBlack, a track  by Ontario’s indie band Oceanship from their eponymous debut album.  Starring Little Sheep and Big Wolf, the animation sadly confirms the poor wolf’s most terrible fear, namely that it’s not what it looks like…it’s even worse!  Furthermore, you should set your sights very carefully when aiming for revenge, otherwise you might end up losing everything you had.

Yours Truly: The Ultimate Kiss-Off Letter

Yours Truly: The Ultimate Kiss-Off Letter

Yours Truly is a truly amazing stop-motion animated eight-minute short film by the British animation genius, Osbert Parker.  The film was nominated for Best Short Animated Film by BAFTA in 2008 and won the Best Short Film, British Animation Awards in 2008.  Despite widespread critical acclaim, Yours Truly has not been available on DVD, nor accessible online until now.

The film’s dark, hard-boiled plot builds upon both the atmosphere and characters of famous film-noir movies of the past.  It’s a crazy combination of stop-motion, cut-out animation and live action that creates a new and strangely re-imagined mean streets of 1940′s Los Angeles, where animated photos of people get out of model cars then turn into real life actors. The impact of Yours Truly is so powerful that you won’t be able to take your eyes away from this wonderful world of shadows, guns, femmes-fatales, and love mixed with betrayal and murder.  Try imagining Casablanca mixed with Double Indemnity on peyote, then shut your eyes and you’ll get the idea.

I double-dare you to watch this movie while trying to eat a juicy bacon cheeseburger!!

Breathturn: I’ll Fly Away in the Morning

Breathturn: I’ll Fly Away in the Morning

Some bright morning when this life is over
I’ll fly away
To that home on God’s celestial shore
I’ll fly away

I’ll fly away oh glory
I’ll fly away (in the morning)
When I die hallelujah by and by
I’ll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone
I’ll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I’ll fly
I’ll fly away

Breathturn is a beautiful music video by Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, a sweetly sad  tale of a young boy who’d like to fly away from the troubles in his life.  Left adrift in a city after the heavens had opened up and the sky poured down like a fountain, the young boy’s hand-crafted origami birds, as well as the music, are both beautiful and breath-taking.  Nola.

A Marvelous, Keen Loony Bin: Townspeople In Hilariously Unfortunate Circumstances

Marvelous Keen Loony Bin is a 5-min. animated short film, a runaway hit produced by Rhode Island School of Design student, Lizzi Akana.  The film paints a surrealistic town where something is always missing and much is to be desired.  People with no faces, arms, or legs fall into hilariously unfortunate circumstances.  With great comedic timing and well-placed sound effects, this film provides an amusing look at our own often unsatisfactory lives.

President Obama Signs the Landmark Health Reform Bill into Law

President Obama Signs the Landmark Health Reform Bill into Law

Congress gave final approval on Sunday night to historic health reform legislation that will provide medical coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and remake the nation’s health care system along the lines initially proposed by President Obama.  When the decisive 216th vote went up on the electronic tally board in the House chamber, Democrats erupted in cheers and reprised the “Yes, we can!” chant from the Obama presidential campaign.

On Tuesday, President Obama signed into law a landmark health care reform bill, presiding over the biggest shift in U.S. domestic policy since the 1960s and capping a year of vigorous debate.  The law will bring near-universal coverage to a wealthy country in which tens of millions of people have been left uninsured.

We have now just enshrined the core principle that everybody should have some basic security when it comes to their health,” Obama said at a signing ceremony at the White House.  President Obama was joined by House and Senate legislators who backed the bill, as well as by ordinary Americans whose health care struggles have touched the president.
