From Little Tuffy of Chicago: A Very Happy Holiday Season to All!

From Little Tuffy of Chicago: A Very Happy Holiday Season to All!

About 2 years ago, an acquaintance showed up at my door with a tiny ball of fur, an eight week-old brown poodle that he’d bought at an outdoor flea market in downstate Illinois. A little pup who had probably been raised abusively in a terrible puppy mill. Although I had no intentions of ever having a pet in my northside Chicago apartment, I relented and took little Tuffy into my home, and soon thereafter into my heart. Needless to say, Tuffy has brought endless joy to this quietly retired senior citizen.

Garry Winogrand: Women are Beautiful

Women are Beautiful is a collection of photographs by Garry Winogrand (1928-1984), which is currently on exhibition in Barcelona at the Foundation Foto Colectania. Winogrand is considered to be one of the greatest innovators of twentieth-century American photography. Winogrand’s pictures are focused on the reflection of reality, with no retouching or other ideas added. Garry Winogrand represented a new American style in photography, which broke new ground in the emerging era of street photography.

Described as an undisciplined mixture of energy, ego, curiosity, ignorance, and street-smart naiveté, throughout the 1950s, the Bronx native photographed incessantly, mostly on the streets, working as a freelance photographer for a picture agency and eventually publishing journalistic images in numerous magazines. Around 1960, after being shown a copy of Walker Evans’s book American Photographs, Winogrand began to take a more artistic approach in his work.

Winogrand eventually published four books of photographs, including Women Are Beautiful in 1975, which was composed mostly of candid shots of anonymous women on the street. He knew like no other photographer of his time how to capture the social transformation of females in the 1960s and 1970s through his portraits of women, which stand as an allegory of women’s emancipation and of their new roles in society.

The Scissor Sisters: Invisible Light

The Scissor Sisters: Invisible Light

Invisible Light is the latest music video by the Scissor Sisters, an erotically charged wonder produced by Nicolás Méndez from the Barcelona collective, CANADA.  The high production values of incredible cinematography, along with an exploration of vintage-style montage, work perfectly.  This jaw-droppingly epic collaboration is a joy to behold, a perfect pairing of visual and musical talents.

The Incredible Fantástico Morales: A Fantastical Nasal-Toot in Three Acts

The Incredible Fantástico Morales: A Fantastical Nasal-Toot in Three Acts

The Fantastic World of Fantástico Morales is a delightfully demented animated short film by the Peruvian animator, Jossie Malis (a.k.a. Zumbakamera).  The psycho-colored animation is a highly dramatic production in three-acts, which follows the incredible and supernatural escapades of the infectious Fantástico Morales, an amusingly unhinged fellow who has been blessed with a magical nasal tooter.  Just a tip: Do not sneeze!

Mindtrip: The Strange Adventures of a Curious Brain

Mindtrip: The Strange Adventures of a Curious Brain

Mindtrip is an amusing, but truly demented three-minute animated short film by the Spanish filmmaker dmente.  The film could be viewed as the filmmaker’s visual response to questions about the nature of inspiration and/or creativity.  At any rate, Mindtrip is a darkly humorous, amazing, mind-tripping digital collage.
