Little Tuffy Explores the Arctic: Discovers Our Backyard Winter Wonderland

After having been stranded inside during Chicago’s bitter cold weather that accompanied the past week’s massive snowstorms, little Tuffy finally ventured outside today to explore the Arctic and see what “Chiberia” was really like. Amazing…the backyard had been transformed into a snowy winter wonderland!

Caught This Little Guy Playing With Himself!!

Don’t worry folks, my Little Tuffy has an owner. He wasn’t homeless. For those wondering, this was taken on a hot summer day at the Belmont Harbor Beach in Chicago. Tuffy had just discovered a new part of the Wall at the beach, exploring it and wondering if he could muster the courage to jump from it all the way down into the lake water.

It was a hot early summer day in Chicago, and Tuffy went swimming in Lake Michigan at the doggie beach at the North Side’s Belmont Harbor. At first little Tuffy was quite puzzled by some new construction at the doggie beach, but ended up having himself a swimmingly fun time!

Heroic Naki’o: Every Path Has Its Puddle….

Heroic Naki’o: Every Path Has Its Puddle….

Naki’o is a heart-warming documentary short film directed by Aaron Pendergast in association with New District Productions, which tells the heroic story of a courageous abandoned puppy. When Naki’o was a small puppy, he was deserted during a frigid Nebraska winter in the basement of a foreclosed home along with his mother. The drastically low winter temperatures and starvation took the mother’s life; but Naki’o, despite being frozen in a puddle of ice water, miraculously survived. His survival, however, came at a tragic cost: by the time he was rescued by Colorado’s All Aboard Animal Rescue, Naki’o had lost all four paws and the tip of his tail to frostbite.

As soon as Christie Pace, a veterinary technician who lives in Colorado Springs, saw Naki’o’s picture, she knew that she had fallen in love with him. “When I got him he was 8 weeks, 4 pounds, and he was missing patches of fur because he had mange. But, he was just such a happy guy,” Pace said. While she knew Naki’o was missing all four paws, as well as part of his tail and nose, she also believed that she would be able to find a solution down the road.

Thanks to Pace, the wounds healed into stumps. Although his lack of paws did not seem too much of a hurdle when Naki’o was just a small puppy, trouble began as he grew bigger and Naki’o found himself unable to support his own weight with his stumps. Pace raised money to pay for prosthetic devices for Naki’o by organizing fundraisers. She then contacted OrthoPets, a US company that specializes in customizing artificial limbs and orthotic braces for animals, to create prosthetics for Naki’o. When they saw Naki’o, however, the animal hospital decided to treat him for free.

Two prosthetic devices were attached to his hind legs. Some months later, prosthetic legs were similarly fitted to his front stumps. Although Naki’o’s life began in a state of heart-wrenching tragedy, he’s now a happy, high-spirited dog, who is able to run, jump, play games and even go swimming.

From Little Tuffy of Chicago: A Very Happy Holiday Season to All!

From Little Tuffy of Chicago: A Very Happy Holiday Season to All!

About 2 years ago, an acquaintance showed up at my door with a tiny ball of fur, an eight week-old brown poodle that he’d bought at an outdoor flea market in downstate Illinois. A little pup who had probably been raised abusively in a terrible puppy mill. Although I had no intentions of ever having a pet in my northside Chicago apartment, I relented and took little Tuffy into my home, and soon thereafter into my heart. Needless to say, Tuffy has brought endless joy to this quietly retired senior citizen.

Limbo: A Story from the Hearts and Mouths of Undocumented Young People

Limbo: A Story from the Hearts and Mouths of Undocumented Young People

Limbo is the new documentary short film directed by Eliot Rausch, created in association with Phos Pictures, which had its World Premier in New York City earlier this week. Previously, Rausch won the Best Documentary Award and the Grand Prize at the 2010 Vimeo Festival + Awards, for his short film Last Minutes with Oden. After winning the 25K Grand Prize Grant from the Vimeo Awards, Director Eliot Rausch partnered with Producer Mark Schwartz and the Dreamers of Los Angeles to create Limbo.

The emotionally moving 19-minute documentary short film exposes the lives of three undocumented students, who are living in Los Angeles without legal status. Without ever before having touched a camera, the students were gifted with a small video camera and provided with a half-day of training. They were asked to film everyday for three months. Through their lens, this is a story from the hearts and mouths of the undocumented.

From Last Minutes with Oden to Limbo

Rausch won the Grand Prize at the first Vimeo Festival + Awards, held in late 2010, for his documentary short film Last Minutes with Oden. The film documents ex-convict Jason Wood’s emotions as he must euthanize his beloved dog, Oden, who had been suffering from cancer. Oden is a poignant, deeply touching chronicle of love between human and pet, which has been viewed on Vimeo more than 2.5 million times.

After winning the award, Rausch said that he began to feel guilty. “I think the project was exploiting the life of a friend and his suffering,” he said. So, in the months that followed, Rausch came up with the idea to use his $25,000 Grand Prize money to create a film that might empower his subjects, rather than simply chronicling their struggles.
