Rothko Painting Goes for Record $72,800,000 at Sotheby’s Auction

Rothko Painting at Auction: Sotheby’s, New York

Mark Rothko: White Center

Last night’s spring evening sale of contemporary art at Sotheby’s in New York made auction history, bringing $254,874,000, the highest total ever for a sale of contemporary art (two masterpieces shattered the previous record for a contemporary work of art at auction). At least five bidders competed for Mark Rothko’s White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose) from the collection of David Rockefeller, which sold for $72,800,000 to an anonymous buyer over the telephone to a wave of applause, setting a new record for a contemporary work of art at auction, as well as for the artist (estimated to be in excess of $40 million).

With such high prices attained at the Sotheby’s auction last night, there is great excitement about tonight’s auction of Andy Warhol’s Green Car Crash at Christy’s in New York. Previously, it had been estimated that Green Car Crash would bring $35,000,000 at tonight’s auction, but expections are now much higher.
