The Most Unfortunate Midnight Mass Ever

** * Warning White Trash Christmas Tale Follows* **

Midnight mass. Good catholics go to midnight mass on Christmas eve. We were young, life was a party. We had our own variation on the celebration of the holiday. We went to midnight mass…. but we went after a few cocktails. All my friends would grab a bottle or two from the parents booze stash and meet in a park. We’d drink what we could and then head on over to midnight mass….This particular year our friend Peggy brought a bottle of Wild Irish Rose to the park. Being the booze connoisseurs that we were (at 16 years old) we all refused to drink it. My friend Mike looked at the bottle and proclaimed, “This is evil. The devil’s blood.” Peggy was quite offended. Usually we would drink anything but today was … well, Christmas Eve. This was no time for crappy wine. We argued the propriety of drinking Wild Irish Rose on a holiday. Peggy was quite upset by our snub. In her own personal protest, she ended up drinking the whole bottle herself.

We attended midnight mass. I noticed Peggy looked quite ill (for some reason or another)…. She looked at me and said “I don’t feel so good“…..”Church” That was the only thing that went through my mind. Peggy is going to barf in church. I looked around at all the statues and they seemed to be staring at me. I heard a loud voice inside my head (was it god?). The voice said, “DO NOT LET HER BARF INSIDE THE CHURCH.”

Great. Now, I’ve done some unholy things in my life but I’ll be damned (literally) if I was going to let Peggy puke on Jesus. My friend Mike and I grabbed her arm and hustled her through the huge double doors. We got her just outside of the front of the church and that’s when Peggy let loose with a huge purple stream of vomit. Mike looked at me and said, “See that’s why I did’t drink that stuff.” I concurred. “Yea good call,” I said as I struggled to stand Peggy up. “But we really should get her off of the steps before mass lets out.” Mike agreed. We both looked at Peggy and she was really upset. She was sobbing about “Going to hell” and “Puking on God.” Mike said to her, “Look Peggy it’s not like you threw up in church. You threw up outside the church so it’s not that bad.” That seemed to calm her down a bit. We threw some snow over the barf, carried Peggy to the car and got the hell out of there.

In some sadness I must report that was the last midnight mass I ever attended.

h/t for this sorta’ sad little story to Ron Slattery at The Big Happy Fun House.

Oprah: We Must Support a Man Who “Loves Mercy and Does Justly”

Oprah Campaigns for Obama in South Carolina

There are times that I even worry about what happens to our country,” Oprah Winfrey said, standing on a small stage before a vast sea of people in the 80,000 person capacity Williams-Brice Stadium football stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. “That is why for the very first time in my life I feel compelled to stand up and speak out for the man who I believe has a new vision for America.”

Thousands of people had streamed into the football stadium for media mogul Oprah Winfrey’s second day of campaigning with Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.  Campaign supporters helped promote a rock concert-like atmosphere, yelling “fire it up” and bands entertained the crowd at the stadium.  Temperatures were in the 70’s – a stark contrast to frigid Iowa, where Winfrey told crowds a day earlier that Obama “has a new vision for America.”

Some early arrivals said the Illinois senator already had their vote.  Others said they wanted to learn more about him, and that the popular talk show host’s presence drew them to the event.  “I want to see Oprah,” said Beverly Cheney, 45, who drove nearly three hours from Fayettville, N.C., and was trying to decide between Obama and former Sen. John Edwards. “But I make my own decision.”  Scott Sowell, 24, of Charleston, said Obama already had his vote.  “I like his integrity and the direction he wants to take the country,” Sowell said.

An Oedipal Storyline: You Won’t Remember This

The Animated Life: You Won’t Remember This

Jeffrey Scher is an artist who is fascinated with vision, in particular the persistence of vision, the ability of the human mind to create the illusion of movement from disparate images. The New York-based filmmaker defines himself not as an animator, but rather as a painter working in motion. Scher’s montages, or “collisions” of visuals and sound, are dizzying arrays of color, light, figures, and forms that flit about like unruly thoughts, tricking the eye and revealing unexpected visual harmonies.

You Won’t Remember This is a piece that was inspired by his 18-month-old son, a rotoscoped re-creation of the evolution of vision during the first years of life. “I’ve tried to reproduce those early primal visuals from the infant’s point of view,” he has said, “by examining the way optical focus and color perception develop, and how the figurative and the abstract blur together and get sorted out over time.”

The film is a portrait of his son, Buster, from his first week of life until he was a few years old. The film came from the impression that Buster wouldn’t remember these years, as, indeed, he doesn’t seem to, but the more Scher drew the more he realized that he didn’t remember them as clearly as he thought he would, either. From Scher’s perspective, there is something about the omnivorous now in parenting, the constantly shifting challenges and demands of the moment, that creates a kind of rolling amnesia for everything yesterday. This film is an attempt to hold onto some of these moments and also to share them with Buster, who is now an articulate, opinionated, sugar- and movie-obsessed seven-year-old.

Scher’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He’s always searching for new ways of seeing. “How images layer up on the eye and the relationship between image and afterimage are triggers for powerful emotions,” he’s observed. “I want to make people feel, so I create aesthetic meals for the eyes.”

L’eau Life is an animation film created to explore animating water in motion with water color. It captures both the feel of water and the emotion of being in it. It develops an energy that feels almost hypnotic, but happily so. It became a celebration of both water and summer. Photographs by Annie Leibovitz and the animation video are included
