Arts By Chance: Away From Nedjma

Arts By Chance: Away From Nedjma

Away From Nedjmas is a 35-sec. short-short film by Ounouri Damien from France. The film was a selection of the Arts By Chance “Ultra Short Film Festival” that held screenings during May 2009 all around the world. The festival was quite unusual, because the 31 selected films were presented to audiences through public advertising screens instead of in movie theaters. This was an attempt to present urban dwellers with stimulating artistic content during periods of times that are usually considered culturally dead. The digital screens were located inside metros, buses, railways, public transportation terminals, shopping malls and airports. Away From Nedjmas is a captivating and surprising interpretation of the festival’s theme this year, which centered on the concept of “Journey.”

Choices: The Life Hazards of Children Who Have No Choices

Choices: The Life Hazards of Children Who Have No Choices

Choices is an inspiring and very creative animated short film by Anton Groves. The animation used thousands of cardboard cuts, which were combined using both stop-motion footage and digital animation. The 2 ½ minute short was created for the charity organization “United Way” in Romania, and was a selection for the 2009 Cannes Lions Advertising Festival. Choices takes the viewer through the childhood and teenage years of a small girl, demonstrating the hazards that potentially lie in wait for those children whose life choices are a result of not actually having a choice.
