The Michael Jackson Memorial Service: We Are the World
Michael Jackson was honored on Tuesday at a memorial service held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, while millions of people watched the service on live television throughout the world. Jackson died on June 25th at the age of 50 in Los Angeles. The 20,000-seat center was filled by Jackson’s fans, friends and others who had known him since he began his singing career with his brothers in the Jackson 5. During the service, there were performances by Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Hudson, among others. There also were appearances by Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and Brooke Shields, each of whom provided touching personal anecdotes about Michael Jackson.
Toward the conclusion of the Memorial Service, a medley of singers performed We Are The World beneath a giant image of the world. They were later joined by dozens of hand-holding, racially-inclusive children, to sing Heal the World. We Are the World was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and originally recorded in 1985 by a supergroup of 45 popular musicians in order to raise funds to help famine-relief efforts in Ethiopia.
