Park Avenue’s Billionaires: How They Stay That Way

Park Avenue’s Billionaires: How They Stay That Way

Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream is the riveting new documentary by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room), which presents his perspective on the increasingly glaring disparity between rich and poor Americans. Gibney contends that America’s wealthiest citizens have rigged the game in their favor, creating an unprecedented degree of financial inequality in the United States.

Gibney proposes that this is nowhere more evident than on New York City’s Park Avenue. 740 Park Avenue in Manhattan is currently home to the highest concentration of billionaires in America. However, just across the river, less than five miles away, Park Avenue runs through the South Bronx, an area that is home to the poorest congressional district in the United States.

In Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream, Gibney states that while income disparity has always existed in America, over the last 40 years it has accelerated sharply. As of 2010, the 400 richest Americans controlled more wealth than the bottom 50 percent of the population, or 150 million people. In the film, Gibney explains why he believes upward mobility is increasingly out of reach for both members of the middle class and the poor.

Enter the Void: The Dark World of Sex, Money and Power

Enter the Void: The Dark World of Sex, Money and Power

Enter the Void is an award-winning film by French filmmaker Gaspar Noé, a psychedelic visual ride through the nighttime metropolis of drug dealers, drug abusers, pole dancers, love-hotel clients, murder and death.  Set primarily in Tokyo, and most often at night, the film is divided into two sections.  In the first part, a young American (Oscar) smokes some hallucinogens, and as the screen explodes with phosphorescent, biomorphic forms, he walks through the city, buying and selling drugs, and discussing the Tibetan Book of the Dead.  In the second section, Oscar’s spirit appears to separate from his apparently dying body, gazing down at the bleeding man curled on the floor.  The flesh will surely rot, but his spirit continues the journey, plunging even deeper into the night and darker memories.

This piece includes the VFX (Visual Effects) for Enter the Void, created by the French visual effects studio, BUF, which also produced the film.  Taking on almost 350 of the films shots over the course of 2 years, BUF added to and even rebuilt many shots to complete the spiritual and hallucinogenic vision of Gaspar Noé.  This article also presents the full-version of Mr. Noé’s movie, Enter the Void.

Charlie Vinkham Discovers His Superpower: It’s Pecunia Olet!

Dollar Bill is a very funny one-minute short film by Marco Aslan, in which our enterprising hero Charlie Vinkham discovers his amazing superpower.  It’s Pecunia Olet, the Smell of Money (or maybe Smelly Money), which coincidentally is the same superpower shared by pornstars, prostitutes and corporate bigwigs.

Just Found Some Money in That Ponzi-Scheme Hedge Fund! Let’s Have a Drink!

Just Found Some Money in That Ponzi-Scheme Hedge Fund! Let’s Have a Drink!

Ah, those wonderful hedge funds, they were all so sexy with their “rich people only” requirements and secretive investments. When Bernard Madoff, finally admitted that his hedge fund was “all just one big lie” and a “giant Ponzi scheme”, it was estimated that his investors lost over $65 billion. This makes it one of the largest cases of investor fraud and definitely largest Ponzi scheme in history. The SEC said it appeared that virtually all of the assets of his hedge fund business were missing. Ooops! Now, five months after Madoff’s massive fraud was revealed, very little of his victims’ money has been found. It appears increasingly likely that the worldwide hunt for the missing billions could drag on for years. So far, only about $1 billion has been located, a tiny fraction of the $65 billion the confessed con man stole from his investors.

But our secret, super-duper professional accountant team has been hard at work in their undercover investigation of every tiny, itsy-bitsy detail of this horrible detailed financial web. And lo and behold, the two of them just found some more money that had been hidden away in that Ponzi-Scheme hedge fund! Yes indeedy, the financial figures are looking better and better, and our super-duper accountant investigators are goin’ to celebrate their glorious achievement by having themselves a little drink! Or maybe two. Or just maybe more….

God Expelled from Tulsa Magic Kingdom: Oral Roberts University Saga Continues

Richard Roberts and his ORU Private Jet

ORU’s “Praying Hands”: For God or More Money?

Earlier in the week, I reported here about the scandal that was emerging at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa (OK). In that article, I wrote:

“Twenty years ago, on his widely viewed national televsion program, televangelist Oral Roberts announced to his viewers that he had been reading a spy novel when, all of a sudden, God visited him and ordered him to raise $8 million for Roberts’ university, or else he would be “called home.” Of course, not wanting that to happen, Roberts’ viewers showered him with vast amounts of money for the university.

Last Tuesday, three former professors at Oral Roberts University sued the evangelical institution in Tulsa (OK), filing a petition in state court that accuses the university’s current president, Oral Roberts’ son Richard L. Roberts, of using university resources to back a local mayoral candidate and to bankroll an extravagant lifestyle for his family. The lawsuit also says that university administrators tried to cover up the president’s involvement in the mayoral campaign when the Internal Revenue Service began investigating the nonprofit institution’s interventions into local politics.

The university immediately issued brief a statement regarding the lawsuit on Tuesday that read, in its entirety, “It is important for ORU students and their families, faculty and staff, alumni, partners as well as the general public to understand that this lawsuit is largely premised upon a compilation of incomplete statements, unsubstantiated rumors, and innuendoes. ORU will address these allegations through the legal process.”

Later in the week, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, announced that God had recently visited him as well, ordering him to deny all of the lurid allegations that are contained in a lawsuit that threatens to bury this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal. As mentioned before, Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and extravagant spending at the university’s donors’ expense, lavish spending that has included numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university’s jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay. She, in turn, is being accused of squandering tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as ‘underage males.'”

Ralph Blumenthal reports in today’s edition of the New York Times that Mr. Roberts was on “Larry King Live” on Tuesday night with his wife, Lindsay, who is also included in the accusations. He denied having taken any improper political role, saying: “I didn’t ask or coerce anybody. That’s not true.” He and Mrs. Roberts also denied wrongdoing to a list of other accusations in the suit. Denials were also made to reporters who flew to New York with the Robertses in the university’s jet.

The original CNN news report on The Oral Roberts Lawsuit, as well as this Tuesday night’s “Larry King Live” television interviews with Richard and Lindsay Roberts are presented below:

UPDATE:

On Thursday (10/11/2007), David Kuo published a detailed response at Belief.net to the statements that were made by the Roberts’ while defending themselves during their television appearance on “Larry King Live.” In general, their statements were characterized as half truths and outright lies, nothing more than an attempt to conceal the facts of what has actually been going on at Oral Roberts University behind a deceptive display of smoke and mirrors. Readers will find the particulars of the rebuttal that David Kuo has published here.
