Chicago’s Legendary Minnie Riperton Sings: Lovin’ You

Chicago’s Legendary Minnie Riperton Sings: Lovin’ You

As a young girl, Minnie Riperton studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Abraham Lincoln Centre, an urban social and cultural center that was originally founded in 1905 as a settlement house in the historic Bronzeville community of Chicago’s South-Side.

As a teenager, she sang lead vocals for a Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. If you listen closely to Fontella Bass’ hit single Rescue Me you can hear the young Riperton, along with The Gems, singing the soulful chorus. Her early connections with the legendary Chess Records in Chicago gave her the chance to sing backup for many other acclaimed performers, including Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters. While with Chess, Riperton also sang for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection from 1967 to 1971. Riperton reached the apex of her short career with her number one hit single, Lovin’ You, in the spring of 1975. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album Perfect Angel.

In 1976, at the age of of twenty-eight, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. In 1977, Riperton became the first African-American woman to serve as spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and to receive the Society’s Courage Award from then-President Jimmy Carter. On Thursday July 12, 1979, at the age of 31, Riperton lost her valiant struggle with cancer. She died peacefully in her husband’s arms while listening to a recording of a song that Stevie Wonder had written for her. Stevie Wonder still considers Minnie Riperton to be one of the greatest singers of our time. In his remarks written about Mariah Carey in Time Magazine’s recent 2008 List of The 100 Most Influential People, Stevie Wonder wrote, “I’ve met only three people who had a truly wonderful voice and spirit to match: my first wife Syreeta, Minnie Riperton and Mariah.”

In addition to her musical legacy, Minnie Riperton is survived by her husband, Richard Rudolph; a son, Marc Rudolph; and a daughter, Maya Rudolph, who has been a cast member of Saturday Night Live.

Bette Midler’s Vegas Extravaganza: The Showgirl Must Go On

Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On

It’s been four long years since Bette Midler last dazzled audiences on the stage in the United States. But next week, she’ll open at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas with what looks to be a knock-out crowd-pleaser in The Showgirl Must Go On. The stage is sure to display the admired diva’s well-known reputation for extravagance.  The set has taken more than a year to construct and has pieces that were created in Los Angeles, New Jersey and New York before being shipped to Las Vegas.  The pieces include three 45-foot-tall trees and curtains that were created out of hundreds of thousands of individually painted gold coins.

Pink clouds compose one of the many electronic images that will glide across a video monitor the size of a movie screen, which serves as a backdrop for the stage.  Bette’s headdress is made of 63 pink silk feathers, nearly 20 feet tall and weighing 3,200 pounds (no, she will not actually wear it).  To amplify her on-stage frolicking, Midler will have a wealth of visual props on hand, along with a 13-piece band, 20 female dancers, 4 backup singers and 5 changes of costume.

Dolly Parton’s Joyful Anthem: Better Get to Livin’

Dolly Parton: Backwoods Dolly

Dolly Parton: Better Get to Livin

Dolly Parton’s Better Get to Livin

Dolly Parton’s forthcoming album might be called Backwoods Dolly, but one particularly uplifting single from the album, Better Get to Livin’, shows that the timeless entertainer is more wise philosopher than a painted, plastic country kewpie doll. She introduced this joyful anthem during an earlier prime-time appearance on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. At the heart of the track is Parton’s sweetly distinctive vocal, backed by the angelic voices of acclaimed gospel songbirds Sonya and Becky Isaacs. The well-crafted lyrics find Parton encouraging others to live life to the fullest. Brimming with Parton’s signature wit, wisdom and personality, it’s the musical equivalent of getting a much-needed boost from your favorite partner.

Christmas is the Most Grobanful Time of the Year

Josh Groban

Biographic Notes

In 1997 and 1998 , Josh Groban attended the summer Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, majoring in musical theater, while also taking voice lessons outside of school. “I started taking music lessons on the side. I was very much into musical theater. I had a pretty good baritone voice, so I began acting and singing in school productions.”

Groban graduated in 1999 from The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a theater major and then attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (PA), studying drama. Groban left Carnegie Mellon after only one year when he was offered a recording contract at Warner Brothers Records. The singer’s debut album, Josh Groban, was released on November 20, 2001. Over the next year, it went from gold to double-platinum.

Groban’s second album Closer was released on November 11, 2003. Groban said that he believed that this second album was a better reflection of him and that his audience would be able to get a better idea of him personally from listening to it. “What most people know about me, they know through my music. This time, I’ve tried to open that door as wide as possible. These songs are a giant step closer to who I really am and what my music is all about. Hence the title.” Two months after Closer was released, it rose on the Billboard charts from Number 11 to Number one.

During the first week of September 2006, Groban’s latest single entitled You Are Loved (Don’t Give Up) was released. It was taken from his third studio album, Awake, which was officially released on November 7, 2006. In June 2007, Josh spent some weeks in London recording a Christmas album with the London Philharmonic and the African Children’s Choir. It was released on October 9, 2007 and is titled Noël. On Noël, Groban adds his own spin to holiday classics without sacrificing an ounce of the sentimentality and charm that have made them so beloved. Moreover, he adds a new holiday favorite of his own to the season’s offerings. The album debuted at Number One on the Billboard charts, a position that it continues to maintain.
